You know that continuing to use gendered language is going to rupture a relationship with a client or cause you to miss out on crucial information anytime now.

Has this happened to you yet?

You’re doing an intake with a new patient and you ask “do you have sex with men, women, or both?” - nice right?

You see your patient’s eyebrows knit together.

“Um, I’m pansexual so...all genders.”

Dammit. You really thought you had been inclusive with that question.

You continue the intake but you’re distracted the whole time. How could you have asked that differently? By the end of the appointment you’re still not sure. You look it up in a resource you saved once about inclusive language but you can’t make the phrasing flow off your tongue right.

But you care so much about being an inclusive practitioner! Why is this so hard?

Well, it’s hard for two really simple reasons - and neither is your fault.

You’ve been using gendered and judgement-laden language since school.

Probably every professor, textbook, and supervisor you learned from used this type of language - so it’s not surprising that those are the phrases that come easily to you. Even if they’re not aligned with your values.

You haven’t had the opportunity to practice.

You’ve seen posts on instagram and read tables full of swaps from “bad” to “good” phrases, but when you’re in the flow of an appointment, the same phrases you’re used to just pop out. And that’s totally normal! If you haven’t practiced incorporating those new phrases into your speech, it’s not going to flow.

People come to you to feel heard, when they haven’t been listened to by other practitioners.

Isn’t it about time for you to be that person for your LGBTQ2SIA+ clients too, instead of leaving them disappointed that you’ve made assumptions about them like every other doctor?

Good news: I’ve created a space where you can learn and practice neutral clinical language. Leave behind the stomach-sinking I-just-messed-up moment and say hello to effortless intakes that build trust, collect information you didn’t know you needed, and make every client feel totally heard.

Hi, I'm Dr. Arlie Millyard, ND

I'm a naturopathic doctor, LGBTQ2SIA+ wellness expert, and linguistics enthusiast. I help health and wellness practitioners build more inclusive practices, so you can impact more lives.

With over 10 years of lived, research, and clinical experience, I bring a deep understanding of both the practitioner’s and the patient’s perspective to the table, promoting clearer communication, increased trust, and better clinical outcomes for LGBTQ2SIA+ patients.

FAQ

  • I feel super anxious about the roleplay scenarios. How can I build knowledge so I’m able to make the most of the practice time?

Your nervousness is totally understandable - this may be the first time you’re trying out this way of interacting with clients! Rest assured, your fellow attendees and trainer will not be judging anyone for tripping over their words at any point during the workshop. But if you want to prepare ahead of time, we highly recommend taking the neutralizing clinical language course (it only takes an hour!) to get the theory down pat before jumping into practice during the workshop.

  • What if I can’t attend live? Will there be a replay?

Because this workshop is so interactive, we won’t be offering a replay, so you will need to attend live if you want to practice these skills. However, we do have a course on the same topic that you can take on your own schedule.

  • Is November 7, 2021 the only opportunity to attend this workshop live?

We don’t have a date set for the next round, but we’re hoping to offer it again Spring 2022. Because we can’t guarantee it’ll happen then (and it almost certainly won't be at this very low price), if you really want to take this training we’d highly recommend you take it now.

  • I have access needs that can make webinars difficult. Can I get some accomodations?

Absolutely you can. Just send an email letting us know what you need and we'll work it out. We always make sure to present information verbally AND visually, and cameras on is encouraged, not required.

Get queer-ed!

2SLGBTQ2IA+ patients all too often face discrimination in doctors' offices. Healthcare providers often don't even know they use heteronormative and cisnormative language that stigmatizes and invisibilizes their clients.

This course will give you practical guidance on how to neutralize your language in clinical and research settings. You'll learn evidence-informed best practices on how to take an inclusive reproductive and sexual health history, how to talk about puberty and fertility, and how to discuss physiology and anatomy without resorting to assumptions or stereotypes about your clients' gender, assigned sex, or their sexual and romantic relationships.

Reduced rate scholarships (50% off) for QTBIPOC practitioners and students available. Contact us for details.

Meet your instructors

Dr. Cyndi Gilbert, ND (she/they), and Dr. Arlie Millyard, ND (she/her) are joining forces for this hybrid learning experience. Since meeting at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, where Cyndi is a faculty member, and Arlie was a student at the time, we have created LGBTQ2SIA+ inclusion resources, co-authored two peer-reviewed articles on health equity, and founded Heal All Consulting as a hub for LGBTQ2SIA+ inclusion education for wellness practitioners, so you can impact more lives.
Cyndi, a person with light skin and short curly greying hair, stands outside smiling at the camera. She is wearing pink-framed glasses and a dark blue shirt.
We both use our many years of lived, research, and clinical experience to bring a deep understanding of both the practitioner’s and the patient’s perspective to the table, promoting clearer communication, increased trust, and better clinical outcomes for LGBTQ2SIA+ patients. Cyndi teaches the self-paced course that provides the theoretical foundations for the practical workshop with Arlie.

FAQ

  • 👩‍⚕️ I'm a [insert your profession or practice here], would this be relevant to me?

Probably! This workshop is designed for practitioners who have one-on-one clinical discussions with clients regarding families, relationships, sexual health, puberty, fertility, pregnancy and postpartum. So in addition to our colleagues in naturopathic medicine, we welcome nutritionists, midwives, doulas, dentists, optometrists, therapists, acupuncturists, medical doctors, nurse practitioners, and more! If you're not sure if this is right for you, just send us an email and we'll let you know.

  • 💜 What if I can’t attend live? Will there be a replay?

Because this workshop is so interactive, we won’t be offering a replay, so you will need to attend live if you want to practice these skills.

  • 📆 Is May 29, 2022 the only opportunity to attend this workshop live?

We don’t have a date set for the next round, but we’ve decided not to offer the workshop again until Spring 2023 at the earliest. Because we can’t guarantee it’ll happen then, if you really want to take this training we’d highly recommend you take it now.

  • 🦻 I have access needs that can make webinars difficult. Can I get some accomodations?

Absolutely you can. Just send an email letting us know what you need and we'll work it out. We always make sure to present information verbally AND visually, and cameras on is encouraged, not required. We do recommend that you're able to interact with your roleplay partner in a similar way to how you interact with your clients.

  • 🌓 Can I take just the course or just the workshop?

These offerings are designed to work together - we find that it’s hard to apply the knowledge from the course without the practice that the workshop offers, and it’s important to have the theoretical framework that the course offers to make the most of the live workshop. However, if you have already taken the course, send us an email and we’ll get you a link to sign up for the workshop.
